Brief History:
The Kurds are a very old people, some historians cite as early as 612 BC, who live in the Middle East. Their majority are Sunni Muslim and have their own language, customs, and traditions. Although they are from the Middle East, they are not Arabic and have a language similar to that of Persian. Historically Kurds were nomadic people who herded sheep and goats, but currently have less nomadic patterns. They have almost constantly been engaged in a turf war for their own land, but have not yet won.

The areas in red indicate the regions in which the Kurdish people currently reside. As you can see, they do not have their own country, but instead have high concentrations that stretch across Turkey, Syria, Armenia, Iraq, and Iran. It is estimated that there are 15-20 million Kurds, about 8 million of which are inhabiting Turkey.
